Is Doubt Keeping You from God's Love?

Many of us are haunted by feelings of anxiety, worry, and doubt. Jesus promised that we are each deeply, personally loved. This promise made in John 3:16 is so simple we often overlook it.

The Most Quoted Promise

What is the most quoted verse in the Bible? You might be thinking of John 3:16, and you'd be right. This verse reminds us, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." It's everywhere, from sporting events to bumper stickers. But how many of us genuinely believe that this promise is personal—that God loves you and me individually?

Struggling to Believe I Am Loved

Even as a non-Christian, I knew God loved the world. But true belief in God's love for me specifically eluded me for a long time. My past was marred with secrets, doubts, and dark thoughts. "How could God love me?" I'd wonder. With 8 billion souls on this planet, why would God notice me among them?

Saint Augustine once said, "God loves each of us as if there were only one of us." That idea is simultaneously comforting and challenging. Today, I want to assure you—no matter where you are or what you have done—that you are the one Jesus loves.

The Power of Personal Love

In Luke 15:4-7, Jesus tells a parable about a shepherd who leaves 99 sheep to find the one that is lost. This reflects the personal, intentional love God has for each of us. Are you feeling lost? Understand that Jesus is seeking you out, carrying you back on His shoulders, celebrating your return.

First John 4 further testifies to this: "God is love." It's not just what He does but who He is. He proved this divine love by sending Jesus, His only Son, to save us. This realization—that I am loved by God—transformed my life.

Transforming Identity Through Jesus

Did you know that John the Disciple, the author of First John, wasn't always the "Apostle of Love"? He was initially known as a "Son of Thunder"—brash and bold, even suggesting heavenly lightning bolts to erase those who rejected Jesus. However, time spent in Jesus' love transformed him, and he began calling himself "the one Jesus loves."

This change in John gives me hope. If a loud, fiery individual like John could become the beloved disciple, then I, too, could change. I went from being known for sneaky childhood antics and a rebellious nature to embracing the love God offered me.

God Loves You—Yes, You

If you've done things you're not proud of, if you’re burdened by past mistakes, know this: Christ died for us even while we were still sinners. God's love reaches into the depths of our imperfections and failures. Romans 5:8 reassures us, "God demonstrated His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

You're not alone, even when you're feeling unworthy, dirty, or ashamed. You are the one Jesus loves. It's not just about feeling loved; it's about believing it by faith. There is no greater love than Jesus laying down His life for us.

A Love Beyond All Understanding

How profound that God's love could be so encompassing, filled with compassion and grace, that He would sacrifice His innocent Son for us. This is the love we are promised—a love that assures eternal life for those who believe. It's a love waiting for you to claim it.

Join me in a moment of affirmation. Say it softly, "I am the one Jesus loves." Close your eyes, feel it, and take it in. Even when you feel distant from God, embrace this truth by faith. Let this realization transform your understanding of your worth and God's infinite love.

May our response to God be one of worship, praise, and devotion. For it is by His love and power that we find our true identity. Amen and amen.
