The noise doesn't have to matter...
There was a time when I felt extremely close to God. I could hear His voice guiding me, sense His presence when I delved into His word, and it felt almost as though He was speaking directly to me. Yet, somewhere along the way, I lost a bit of that spiritual intimacy and enthusiasm. If you find yourself feeling less enthusiastic about the divine aspects of life, know that this message is for you. I personally understand that struggle.
A Prayer for Renewal
Let's start with a prayer: Lord, let the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts glorify and honor You, my rock and redeemer. Amen. Especially in today's challenging times, staying optimistic is crucial. It's incredible how followers of Christ are always full of faith. Enthusiasm, there are two types of people in this world: those who let circumstances affect their mood, and those who use their enthusiasm to influence circumstances. It is in God—in God alone—that true enthusiasm is born.
Understanding Enthusiasm: A Spiritual Gift
The term 'enthusiasm' originates from the Greek word 'entheos', meaning 'in God' or 'filled with God'. True spiritual enthusiasm isn't something we conjure up based on our surroundings. Instead, it's a posture of heart, fueled by God's presence and power. The Apostle Paul captured this sentiment in 1 Corinthians 15:57-58, rejoicing in the victory given to us through Jesus Christ. His words urge us to work enthusiastically for the Lord, knowing that our efforts in God's name are never in vain.
A Tale of Enthusiasm: David's Journey
Consider David in the Old Testament—a shepherd boy turned king who once possessed immense enthusiasm. When facing Goliath, David exhibited raw spiritual confidence, born out of his daily walks and worship with God. Remarkably, he trusted God daily and, because of his steadfast faith, never doubted during times of adversity. However, as king, David drifted away from this enthusiasm, as complacency set in. This loss occurred when he shifted focus from his calling to personal comfort—a shift that can happen to any of us.
Rekindling the Flame
We all face the risk of losing our spiritual enthusiasm, especially during such tumultuous times marked by pandemics and global challenges. Many have drifted into complacency, losing the vibrant, passionate call once recognized. If you've found yourself here, know that it is possible to rekindle that fire. David, when confronted by his sin, cried out to God for a renewed spirit and the restoration of his joyous salvation (Psalm 51).
Steps to Rediscover Spiritual Enthusiasm
-
Trust God Daily: Like David, we must trust God each day. Reflect on the divine callings of your life and the victories, trusting He will provide strength and guidance.
-
Walk with God Daily: This entails more than attending services—it’s about daily spiritual engagement, allowing God’s presence to be a continuous part of your life.
-
Worship God Daily: Not out of obligation, but from a place of delight and gratitude, find moments each day to worship and praise God.
A Call to Action
There are two types of people—those who allow external trials to impact their internal state, and those who let the inner work of Jesus influence their environment. I seek to let the light within me shine brightly, impacting the darkness around. As David rediscovered his calling, I invite you to do the same. Start by reflecting on God’s goodness and immerse yourself in His word, letting it nurture your soul.
Let us pray: Father, thank you for each person present and those joining online. Infuse our lives with your presence and build our faith. Let us do what we first did—not from duty, but from delight. Thank you for setting us free through Jesus, empowering us to serve enthusiastically, fueled by the joy of the Lord, our strength. Amen.
