The sound of music.

June 28, 2017 by Rev. Mona Scrivens

Have you ever been moved by a song - the kind of song that when you hear it, you are immediately reminded of another time and place in your life?

Music has always been a part of my life. From childhood through my adult years music has been a source of healing, a vehicle for joy, and a means to express myself and worship God.

Growing up, I was a latch-key kid. I would come home from school, let myself in and wait until my mom came home from work. I would have the house to myself,  so I would play make-believe and pretend to be a musical phenom. I would put on a Barbara Streisand album (yes, a real record album) and with my hair brush as a makeshift mic, I would belt out each song with as much emotion as any 10 year old could muster.  “Memories, light the corners of mind….”

For my birthday last year Brian took my very first Babs concert and I literally cried through every song.  The memories tied to each song actually caught me off guard.

Music affects our heart and soul.

For me, there are times that music can express what I feel when words fail me. It can lift me up when I am down and bring healing to my wounded spirit. Music enables me to lift my voice to God in praise and worship.  As I reflect on scripture, it is a fitting expression:

Psalm 33:1-4 (NLT)

Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise him. Praise the Lord with melodies on the lyre; make music for him on the ten-stringed harp. Sing a new song of praise to him; play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy. For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does.

Music is one of God’s greatest gifts and a powerful way to worship the Creator.

A song that has grabbed my heart of late is a new song from Hillary Scott called “Be Still”. Take a listen and may your soul be lifted!

I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.  Join us as we continue our series called Parenthood and then gather around the table for Communion. Please come, it will be a wonderful time of worshipping our Creator, together!

See you then, and in the meantime......Happy Canada Day!!!
