Christmas is about a child.
He is the Christ Child, the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior to the people. For this we have reason to rejoice.
This week we light the second Advent Candle and as we do we remember God’s promise of joy.
When I think of joy and Christmas I am led directly to Luke 1:45-55 - Mary’s song of praise and joy.
There must have been times when Mary was so frightened, worried and sad. How was she going to do this? How was she going to raise this child? Why had she been chosen? She must have been plagued with questions and uncertainty and yet she says in obedience and faithfulness to God, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Can you imagine? Knowing the hardships she would have to endure, she still freely submitted to God. Was she crazy? Or was she faithful to a God she knew would take care of her no matter what? And here in this passage we find words of joy even in the midst of uncertainty.
I am inspired by her obedience and faithfulness to God. And I believe that her words guide each of us to look for the joy of God, even when things may be uncertain for us.
I encourage you in this time of preparation to take a closer look at Luke1:45-55;
